FAQs

Do I need to see my GP first?

Private insurance companies often require your GP to refer you to ensure funding. The referral letter can either be faxed to Julie Canning (private medical secretary) on 0121 352 1971 or you can bring it with you. If you are not insured (self-paying) a referral letter is not required, however, it if often helpful.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

You will normally be seen within a week of being referred.

Do I need private medical insurance?

No. Not insured (self-paying) patients are welcome; indeed many patients seen in the clinic do not have private healthcare insurance.

I have insurance, do I need to inform them first?

Yes. It is important to check your health insurance company will cover the cost the treatment you are seeking, so that you are not left with any unexpected bills. However, if you provide details of your scheme, policy number and pre-authorisation number, in most instances your insurer can be billed directly, rather you having to get involved in payment arrangements.

What will happen at the consultation?

The consultation involves discussion of the symptoms you have been having, followed by an examination of your skin. Then we will discuss your diagnosis and the treatment options, including any tests, such as blood tests or skin biopsies that may be helpful. A new patient appointment normally lasts 20 to 30 mins and a follow-up appointment lasts 10 to 15 mins.

What happens after the consultation?

A letter will be sent to your GP and yourself, detailing your consultation and treatment recommendations.

What happens if I require a prescription?

You will receive a private prescription for any creams that are recommended and you will be able to collect these straight away from either the hospital pharmacy or a high street chemist (these are not covered by the NHS prescription tariff or any NHS pre-payment scheme).

What happens if I require a procedure?

If you require surgical treatment or a skin biopsy, smaller procedures can usually be completed on the day you attend. More complex procedures need to be booked in advance, but can usually be completed within a week on your initial appointment. All additional costs for this will be fully discussed with you before being performed and there is no obligation to proceed with treatment privately after a consultation.

How much will it cost?

For self-paying patients a new patient consultation is £150 and a follow-up consultation £100.

Procedures are billed separately & you will receive a detailed breakdown of any costs, before any treatment. Further information is available on the Spire website

How can I book an appointment?

If you are self-funding you can choose to book online or call 0121 580 7119 for an appointment. If you are using your insurance, please call  0121 580 7151 to arrange an appointment.
